Camping on Manitoulin Island

Willow Farm Grasses revisited

I dragged Eric out to a nursery that specializes in ornamental grasses last weekend. You can also wander around their property, several acres of meadow.  Last year I bought sweetgrass and prairie dropseed. I bought three more this time, which I’ll photograph after I plant:

  • Switchgrass – Panicum virgatum “Warrior”
  • Little bluestem – Schizachyrium scoparium “The Blues”
  • Tufted hairgrass – Deschampsia cespitosa

Arboretum and Bruce Side Trail

On an afternoon hike at the Arboretum we stumbled upon the side trail to Inglis Falls. Didn’t go all the way to the falls, but the icy river was gorgeous!

Last Friday I took a hissy fit because Eric was going fishing AGAIN but I wanted to go do something fun. I could not, however, think of anything to do. Luckily for me, his fruitless fishing trip gave him time to think of something great–> he remembered the bookshop!

On every of the 5,000 drives up from Guelph (pre-April) we’d zoomed past a large and intriguing used book store just south of Owen Sound. We never had time to stop on our way in and it was always closed on our way back.

Yay for books!

Turns out Saturday morning is a perfect time to visit: they also have a restaurant and you can walk around perusing books with your coffee while you wait for your meal. And peruse I did with two high-ceilinged floors full of books and quite a large collection of sci-fi. The shop itself is in an old mill, so I posed for a photo with my purchases along the little river.

What did I find? A Nebula award stories 1965  and Mathematical recreations of Lewis Carroll Volume I: Symbolic Logic and The Game of Logic. And now I have something new to bring on fishing trips.

Playing tour guide

Our buddy Mike visited for a week and in addition to trying out our charcoal grill we also went sightseeing and exploring all around the area.

Brant Lake

These photos are from a trip to Brant Lake, one of the Grand River conservation areas we have access to with our season’s pass. While Eric fishes, Abbey is mesmerized by the lures, Sage is mesmerized by any and every passerby, and I am lucky to finish reading a single short story.

Riverside Park

To avoid heatstroke this week, we got the dogs shaved down to the beards and took them swimming a bunch of times. This trip to Riverside Park turned Abbey into a swamp monster a mere hour after she came back from the beauty salon.

And a bumpy overexposed video to match:
