Inglis Falls

Mom and Auntie Helen came to see the house. We visited Harrison Park yesterday in the sun and Inglis Falls today in the rain. Just before it snowed. Now that I think of it, every time mom visits it snows… hm.

House concerts

Last Sunday Eric and I attended our first Owen Sound “house concert”– which wasn’t actually in a house at all but at a vegetarian juice bar called The Bleeding Carrot. We didn’t know anything about the band or what to expect.

The concert turned out to be fantastically cozy, about 25 or so people in a space that seated just about that many (and everybody here is really nice!) We had tea and snacks and I just loved, loved, loved the trio from Toronto called The Jessica Stuart Few.

Here’s a video of theirs called “Winter Warm” appropriate for today:

Moving out, moving in

Firm and binding

At long last, Eric and I have purchased a house! As of today all the conditions have been met and the contract is now “firm and binding”. Freak out!

The closing date is April 2nd, so if this doesn’t get bumped up we’ll be moving to Owen Sound just after Easter.

Here it is!

Our new house!

And here’s a slideshow Eric put together with images stolen from the listing realtor’s website:

Stone cottage on the river, anyone?

Yesterday we drove up to Owen Sound to see this house. It’s a two storey stone cottage built in 1939 and more than absolutely adorable. So many original details remained: the tile floor in the bathroom, the built-in glass-doored bookshelf in the living room, the dark-stained French doors and trim all around, the curved ceiling in the master bedroom, two built-in corner cabinets in the dining room… Try to tell me my vintage reference books and flowery teacups aren’t screaming for a home like this! The icing on the cake is that it sits right along the Sydenham River with 250 feet of waterfront property. Pretty much every room in the house has a river view and Eric could quite literally fish in his pyjamas from the backyard.

Unfortunately for us, some less than romantic details also remain: knob and tube wiring, asbestos, smoke-stained plaster walls, old carpeting, some riverbank erosion… Oh, and the price. None of the needed updates would be insurmountable if the cost weren’t already stretching our budget to the max and if we had any home-renovation skills whatsoever. Maybe someday!

Owen Sound

I didn’t take very many photos on our 3 day trip to check out Owen Sound. We were busy stalking the houses for sale whose MLS descriptions we’d printed and stapled in street number order (we were very organized about this). The photos I wish I had taken include:

  • the beautiful Carnegie Library’s vaulted ceiling (and the book-spine shaped donor plaques inside)
  • the Tom Thompson Art Gallery’s Thompson mascot head
  • the stained glass hanging in the artist co-op gift shop
  • the talkative guy in the grocery store who broke the jar of instant coffee
  • the rabbit we saw out the hotel window

Here’s what I did take:

Beer fish

On a trip to Owen Sound to determine its livability, I understood this street art inspired by beer labels to be a good sign.

Art along the pathway to the Owen Sound farmer's market.
Shiny arty fish.
On closer inspection, many fishes.
Most amazingly, all the fishes are beer fishes.
